Successful Welcome Week and New International Programme at School of Engineering

In September 2018, the School of Engineering at Wels Campus welcomed more than 150 new international students from over 50 countries. During a one week programme they were welcomed on campus, received first introductions and found their ways around.

Students join our School of Engineering either for a semester or year of exchange studies or they move to Upper Austria for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. FH Upper Austria also offers the “International Foundation Programme” for international applicants, who do not yet fulfil the entrance requirements for a Bachelor’s degree programme in Austria.

The new international Master’s degree programme in “Electrical Engineering” attracted further students from all over the world – 16 students from 7 countries have commenced their studies in Wels. Sebastian Gómez from Mexico chose to study at FH Upper Austria because of the English taught offer as well as the academic and practical expertise of the Upper Austrian professors. He adds, “I have already completed my Bachelor’s degree here and it has been an incredible experience so far. The location, weather and culture kept me in Upper Austria!”

Matthias Musil and Philipp Ragginer, both from Austria, decided to continue their Electrical Engineering studies in Wels in order to deepen their knowledge. “Working in the high voltage laboratory during your studies is a unique opportunity and allows us to gain valuable experience. We could even think of continuing our research activities for a PhD”, says Philipp. Matthias adds “the international environment as well as the possibility of study or internships abroad in order to work on cutting-edge projects is a great combination!”. Dr. Peter Zeller, Head of Studies: “We are proud to now offer a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree programme in the field of Electrical Energy Engineering and thus support the region of Upper Austria with much needed graduates in this area!”

Hosting international students in Upper Austria is part of FH Upper Austria’s “Internationalization @ Home” efforts, to enable also Austrian students and staff without the opportunity to go abroad to experience a multinational and intercultural learning and living environment.

Dr. Michael Rabl, Dean of the School of Engineering, supports the institution’s internationalization strategy. “Over the past years an increasing amount of international exchange students have chosen our institution for their studies abroad. Some of them also come back for one of our five English taught degree programmes. Internationalization is a big priority at the School of Engineering as it is becoming increasingly important in today’s globalized world to be able to live and work with people from different backgrounds. At our campus, Austrian and international students work in interdisciplinary and intercultural teams in order to learn this already during their studies.”

We wish all students a successful semester and all the best for their studies!
