Open Access Publishing at FH Upper Austria

Since January 2016 Open Access articles can be published in Journals from the Springer publishing house as well as Elsevier, Emerald, Frontiers, IEEE, International Water Association, MDPI, Taylor&Francis and Wiley. All information can be found on this page. 

Individual solutions for other publishers can be made after consulting the relevant superior or project leader. Opportunities for discounted Open Access publishing opportunities at FH Upper Austria are underway.

Elsevier

As part of the Open Access agreement with Elsevier, authors from the FH Upper Austria can publish Open Access titles in *hybrid journals and in **Fully Gold Open Access at no additional cost. Important for the submission process: 

  • Contribution author is a member of the FH Upper Austria 

  • Affiliation selection: University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria 

After acceptance (article acceptance for publication) select the Open Access option and a Creative Commons license in the Author Dashboard. The publisher contacts the library of the FH Upper Austria, which checks whether the contributing author belongs to the FH Upper Austria.

Emerald

From 2017, all articles by Austrian authors accepted by Emerald can be published as Open Access articles - at no additional cost for the institution. The author must agree to the OA publication with a cc-by license.

Frontiers Open Access Agreement

The FH Upper Austria has arranged an agreement with the open access publisher Frontiers. If the FH Upper Austria assumes the costs, a 10% discount on the article processing charge applies. 

When submitting articles (corresponding authorship required), please state / select “University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria” as your affiliation. For all authors who would like to submit an article in Frontiers journals, we recommend discussing with the respective R&D (F&E) department or the project manager in advance whether the costs for the article will be covered. 

 

IEEE

From November 30, 2021 to December 31, 2024, members of the FH Upper Austria have the opportunity to publish open access at IEEE free of charge. 

Members of the FH Upper Austria can publish open access in around 20 Gold OA journals and 158 hybrid journals from IEEE free of charge and have access to the publisher's scientific journals.

Who can publish Open Access? 

Eligible for funding are authors who: 

  1. are the corresponding author of the article and belong to the FH Upper Austria 

  1. use the institutional email address during the submission process 

  1. whose article was accepted in a journal by IEEE 

  1. publish a peer reviewed article 

ATTENTION: a subsequent change of the corresponding author after the peer review is not permitted. 

Procedure / verification process: 

When submitting the article, indicate that you belong to the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. The affiliation of authors to the FH Upper Austria is recognized by specifying the institution and using the institutional email domain. 

The membership / affiliation is verified by IEEE and the FH Upper Austria. 

The article is published under a Creative Commons license. 

International Water Association

The consortium agreement with the International Water Association (IWA) came into force on January 1st, 2019. This was concluded between the publisher and the eight paying KEMÖ (Kooperation E-Medien Österreich) member institutions. It includes access to the publishing portfolio for all KEMÖ members, as well as the waiver of the APC fee for affiliated authors of all KEMÖ institutions. 

Authors of the FH Upper Austria will be waived the APC fee within the framework of the agreement. The OA workflow is structured as follows: 

  • To be able to submit an article to IWA, the authors must create a personalized account and provide their institutional email address 

  • The affiliation must be indicated during the submission of the article 

  • Based on these two parameters, the publisher identifies the authors' affiliation to the respective institution

MDPI Open Access Agreement

The FH Upper Austria has an agreement with the academic open access publisher MDPI, which grants our authors a 20 % discount on the article processing charge. The discount applies to accepted articles. Employees and employees who are the corresponding author or co-author of the article.

Springer Verlag : Read and publishkostenfreies Publizieren in Springer OpenChoice Journals

Free publishing in Springer OpenChoice Journals 

The members of the KEMÖ cooperation (Kooperation E-Medien Österreich) and the FWF (Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung) have agreed on the pioneering license model "Springer Compact". This gives Austrian scholars access to more than 2,000 subscription journals and enables Austrian authors to publish open access in subscription journals free of charge. 

To be able to publish Open Access free of charge within the scope of this license model, the following conditions must be met: 

  • You are a member of the FH Upper Austria 

  • You act as the "corresponding author" 

  • Springer offers the journal in which your article is to be published as a Springer OpenChoice Journal 

  • The following article types are supported: OriginalPaper, ReviewPaper, BriefCommunication or ContinuingEducation 

If the article is accepted, the “corresponding author” will be asked to identify themself as belonging to the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria in the Springer “My Publication” tool and to agree to the open access publication under a Creative Commons license (CC-By). Please use your institutional email address to facilitate the verification of the affiliation. 

The affiliation to the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences is checked, the article is approved and the publication process at Springer continues.

Taylor & Francis

As of 2017, authors from the FH Upper Austria can publish their articles accepted by the T&F review process at discounted conditions as OpenAccess publications. There is a 30 % discount on the Article Processing Fee (APC). 

We recommend authors from the FH Upper Austria to contact Michaela.fehringer@fh-linz.at regarding OA publications at T&F. 

Wiley-Journals

Employees and students at the FH Upper Austria can publish accepted articles (subject to corresponding authorship, article type: Primary Research / Review) in Wiley Hybrid Journals in Open Access format until 2023. The publication costs (APC) are covered by the library license.
