Projekte sind ein essenzieller Bestandteil des Curriculums von Mobile Computing. Die Studierenden bekommen die Möglichkeit, das im Zuge ihres Studiums erworbene theoretische Wissen selbst praktisch umzusetzen. Ein sowohl für StudentInnen als auch für Lehrende immer wieder spannendes Unterrichtskonzept, in dem schon erfolgreiche Startups wie z.B. runtastic und Butleroy ihre Anfänge gefunden haben.

A mobile network driving trajectory generator

Modern simulation tools often depend on moving users on a road network, therefore they use either statistical approaches like trip generation or they use deticated sensors which identify moving object like cars. The statistical approaches are only precise if the number of users who participate in the survey is high compared to the population. The usage of sensors is costly and therefore only used on the higher level road network.

Road Network Generation for Traffic Simulations

The main focus of this projects lies on the implementation of a tool which supports the generation of road networks for traffic simulations. The tool should be able to import Open Street Map data and export this data into a predefined XML format which is used by a traffic simulation tool. Furthermore it should be possible to create road networks manually as well as to make use of so-called Lindenmayer systems to create realistic networks automatically.

The Intelligent Building System: Monitoring of Energy and Environmental Data in Public Buildings

In order to bring better feedback information about energy consumption to the user and build his/her awareness about energy savings, it is necessary to have a notification system that will provide sufficient and effective information at the right time. With such a system user would be able to receive a notification message that would remind him/her about certain action in order to preserve energy consumption on a relevant level and that way contribute to better energy saving strategy.

Mobile Device Policy Management

We looked at the kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) to virtualize the software stack of a mobile operating system (e.g. Android) to ensure feasible security for promising applications (health card, electronic passport, banking, mobile wallet,…). Virtualization and kernel level MAC each offer us a way of isolation, which can be combined in an enhanced design. Both concepts of isolation have their advantages and disadvantages, but when combined offer a benefit to the approach we proposed.

KVM Based Virtualitation for Android Devices

With KVM Virtualisation it should be possible to run a second Android instance on an Android device. In this instance sensitive data can be handled and stored. So this data is protected against security attacks and abuse. Also a switching between the instances is provided.

Seamless area-based positioning technologies

The goal of the project/thesis is to look for an energy efficient seamless positioning mechanism. Whereas the focus is not on position accuracy, but on robustness, energy efficiency, and costs. The idea is to identify the approach of a person to a dedicated target area based on the cells of a mobile network, in the nearer vicinity GPS or WLAN-cells could be used. Inside the target area (i.e. an airport or an train station) the persons are coarsely positioned based on WLAN cells.
