Studienprojekte

SailMotion is a system that measures and records relevant values, e.g. GPS position and wind speed, during an offshore sailing session. These values get evaluated and will be presented on a tracking map showing the route of the offshore sailing session. The sailor can use this to analyze different scenarios in order to learn and prevent making mistakes in the future.

Ziel

The sailing sport is linked with many factors that need to be considered, but may not be available offshore. The most important factor is of course the wind. Since the wind is no constant factor to be calculated with, rather variable in direction and strength, it is hard to perform accurate steering on a boat. Though, it is not necessary to provide a sailor with true wind information, as he uses analogue methods to perform good steering, he often is interested in analyzing the scenarios afterwards. This is where SailMotion can assist. There are already some tools existing that can be taken for analytical reviews such as recording position information via GPS and depict the route in a geographical map like Google Maps. SailMotion wants to build up on that with collecting relevant information while being offshore and store them in time-discrete intervals. This information may constitute of the true wind angle, heading angle and speed alternation and can be additionally depicted on the route map. Based on this knowledge, the sailor can evaluate in which areas or arms weaknesses occurred that could have been avoided.
