Erasmus Policy Statement (EPS)

The Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences fully supports and encourages both teaching and student mobility within the framework of LLP. The goal of the institution is to strengthen and further develop mobility activities at all four schooles. The goal is to acquire more partner institutions which offer programmes in these specific fields. Our acquisition activities focus on English-speaking countries, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.  The institution fosters teaching staff mobility in order to develop new partnerships and to maintain the existing ones. As far as multilateral projects are concerned, the institution continues to develop new projects in addition to the current ones. Erasmus activities are publicized on the homepage and presented at various university-wide functions such as: International Fair, Open House, Study Abroad Photo Contest, etc. Furhtermore, our international activities are published in press releases as well as in all Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences information materials. The international office staff is represented at various international fairs including EAIE, NAFSA, APPLE, etc. PR-materials are developed and updated regularly (e.g., CD, Study Guide, information brochure). The new EPS and EUC will be displayed on our website as well as in our international offices.
The Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences actively supports gender equality (women in technical professions). A programme to reintegrate mothers into the workforce is for instance offered at Wels Campus. Also, personal communication skills training is part of all our programmes. Moreover, a number of foreign language courses are offered as electives to satisfy student demand.

The Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences implements the following measures in order to ensure high quality in academic mobility activities for outgoing students:

  • screening of students who wish to study abroad according to academic criteria
  • all work completed abroad is individually reviewed and evaluated
  • the ECTS credit system is fully implemented. Presentations of partner universities and information sessions on study abroad take place regularly

The four international offices (one at each of the four schools of our institution) help incoming exchange students to plan their exchange semester at our institution: they reserve accomodation upon demand, send out information packages (study guides, confirmation letter, etc), and organize an orientation program upon arrival, as well as German language courses.
Incoming students are provided with an academic advisor who helps them to choose appropriate courses. Our Erasmus Student Network provides a buddy system which pairs incoming students with Austrian students. In order to support and encourage staff mobility, we offer English language training. The international offices and the administration work to support staff mobility in matters of organization and also publicize these activities. We are in the process of developing a way to include the hours taught abroad in the teaching load of our teaching staff.

The Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences encourages students to do their work placements abroad. Work placements are part of all our curricula (in our Bachelor's degree programmes). A specific time period is reserved for practical work in all study programmes. Due to the great importance placed on practical work as distinctive part of education at all Austrian Universities of Applied Sciences, quality is our prime consideration. Therefore, each student is provided with an advisor - both in the company/organization and our institution. During and after the work placement, the student's work is evaluated by both. About 50% of projects carried out within work placements serve as a basis for the final thesis. As a consequence of the integration of companies into the new LLP-Programme, we will include more and more foreign companies and institutions in other countries in our network, and we plan to increase the number of student exchanges for work placements because we already face an increasing demand for work placements abroad by part of our students.
Project work and the exact terms of each work placement are agreed upon in writing before the work placement begins. A formal mark is given for each project/work placement . Teaching staff are obliged to monitor their students' progress during work placements. Incoming students can participate in projects and work placements in our institution, as well as in Austrian companies/organizations. The same quidelines which apply to our regular students apply to incoming exchange students.
