Formalities

For students from other EU countries and also Switzerland there are no particular formalities; a valid passport is sufficient. With Non - EU countries, however, your international coordinator needs to ensure that you comply with all visa regulations for Austria.

Local Registration

In Austria all changes of address have to be registered with the local authority within three working days, and this regulation also applies to foreign exchange students. In order to register, you need to take your passport (with a valid visa if required) and an official registration form, the "Meldezettel," to the "Meldeamt," city of Linz, located in City Hall. Furthermore the "Meldezettel" has to be signed by your landlord/landlady or the administrator of your accommodation.

You will be given an official print-out of your registration details, which you will need when you register for health insurance coverage and other official business. You will also need it before your departure.

Approximate living costs

Approximate living costs per month

Rent (inclusive) 275 Euros
Food 170 Euros
Entertainment 100 Euros
Miscellaneous   55 Euros
Total  600 Euros

Most banks offer free student bank accounts which can be opened with a valid passport and student ID. Students over 25 must provide proof of university registration ("Studienbestätigung").

Insurance

If you will be staying in Austria for less than one year, you should find out if there is an agreement between your home country and Austria regarding health insurance.

EU countries have reciprocal health insurance agreements. European students should obtain an E 111 or E 128 form from their local health insurance organization to ensure that they can be treated in Austria in the case of illness without having to pay.  After you arrive in Linz, take the  E 111 or E 128 form to the  Upper Austrian Health Insurance Company (OÖGKK), Gruberstrasse 77. The OÖGKK will provide you with an e-card, which you will need to access medical care. If you are a student from a country which does not have a health insurance agreement with Austria,  you can insure yourself with the Upper Austrian Health Insurance Company (OÖGKK) for a fee of about 24 Euros per month. You can get the application for this insurance from the International office.
